Demons Run {Closed / Jacky}

Post by Gaia on Tue Dec 18, 2018 10:12 pm

The gentle sound of the waves was all she bothered listening to anymore. When Alice first moved to Chicago, she didn't expect to ever get used to the noise. Each city was different, and what she used to be able to nap through back home had seemed so fresh, new, and unbearably loud. It had crossed her mind more than once to cause a little something that might call for a curfew. The heroes would already be on their toes and actively trying to get better, and the citizens would quiet down. A few foundations ruined, some cars tossed, innocents lightly maimed just to get the point across.

Alice sighed and walked up to the edge of where the water met the sand and started twisting a bit. Her feet dug into the wet, clinging stuff like roots and the salt water cooled her further as it lapped around her ankles. Likely all for the better that she hadn't done the greedy thing and tried to take over as soon as she got here. She wouldn't get to enjoy this. Better to settle down and spread some roots so that she could get a feel for the place. The people, the low lifes, the heroes, defenses, hopes, dreams, fears, her sundress clinging to her leg-

Alice snapped out of her reverie and looked down to see the water coming up to her knees now.
"And here I was hoping to keep this thing dry for once." Never failed. Wear a sundress near the water, it'd get wet. Even if she rooted herself beyond where the water should be able to surge enough to get up to the fabric, she just ended up wandering out to sea. Still, now that the happenstance gods had been appeased by a couple inches of wet material, she could continue on her trek down the beach. Maybe if she was lucky, she'd find some driftwood.

Clouds feel like wet cotton slipping across the skin. Breathing it wasn’t nearly as easy. Not nearly as necessary to the whole experience, though. It was the being among them that somehow lightened his chest more than anything. It was the new height reached, both literally and figuratively. It was almost being able to see stars. He drifted on the currents, body aching from the fatigue of it all. The bruises would be something to see but that would be later. In the moment there was nothing else to be concerned with but what he could see through the red tinted goggles on his face. Another gift from the nice people that had helped improve upon his costume, one of the many little tools on his person that he hadn’t thought of ever making use of before. Could see much better and his eyeballs didn’t quite feel like they were having a cheese grater taken to them. That was an unpleasant distraction.

But all good things.

Hard to describe, he thought. The first time he’d been asked how it felt to use his quirk there was nothing but half words and shrugs. Because, in of itself, there were no words to give it form; just feelings that were warm and soft and comforting in their own way. They started at the tips of his toes this time but not always there. As it gained traction he felt weight begin to reassert itself and the pull became greater by noticeable increments. There was pain, but far less than had been inflicted by the initial climb. Another breath and he reached for the feeling and pushed it again, felt it grow thicker, a little choking by the time it reached his neck. His descent grew much faster. A few seconds more and his lungs started to burn, his body screamed at him to stop pushing but there was no telling just how much he’d need.

The air in his throat burst out in a long, whistling warcry before hitting the water.

“JACKY BO—” Water exploded, made a sound like crashing concrete as the young man hit the water, reaching for his belt at the moment of impact. It rose as an angry wave that threw itself against the shore and hadn’t even settled before being disturbed again as Jackie flung himself free of it, dry, and onto land. Not gracefully, given the way only the tips of his feet caught the sand and sent him tumbling across the ground hard. Still, he laughed, childlike and free, when finally sprawled out on his back when there was no more momentum to send him tumbling.

Funny, when he looked up he just saw the sky instead. Trying again he only saw a bit of his chest before the same view took him again. The laughter became a bit more nervous, if only to himself.

“Jacky might have overdone it.”

If the shout didn't get her attention, the sound of crashing concrete certainly did. As the wall of water approached, Alice briefly wondered if suppressing herself for the sake of her plan was truly worth it. Because something like this? Like someone creating a massive wave from a canon ball from only who knew how high in the air? That was just ridiculous and she was already as wet as she wanted to be for a trip to the beach. There was even a nice piece of driftwood next to her left pinkie toe that she could use as the base for a shield.

Then she noted the person actually leaping out ahead of the wave, and the distraction killed any chance she had of reacting with her full ability.

When the world stopped being water, she was at least still standing there. Even if she supposedly didn't have her quirk anymore, the physical training she'd had to go through for that school wasn't going to go away quite that quickly. She was soaked through her dress though. The poor, maligned white material had it's revenge in just barely revealing the floral patterned one piece beneath. She hadn't planned to get wet today, but it was a precaution. Plan for each possibility. That had been one of her teacher's favorite phrases. Possibilities such as-

"Oh, right. Where did the little water bomber go?" she mused as she looked around. A few people were soaked as she was, one coughing, and one off to the side, laying on his back. The only one still laying on their back as far as she could see. "And we have a winner." she said with a small giggle.

On the short trek over, Alice opted not to wring out her dress too much. She needed to hold on to as much natural annoyance as she could to grill the man just a little. The last few feet she made a show of stomping in the sand up to the man's side. Not at face height, more abdomen level. If he couldn't see how annoyed she looked from the sand in his eyes, the whole facade meant nothing. She quite pointedly set her fists on her hips before leaning over the laughing one, her face as closed to annoyed as she could manage.

"What was that now? Overdone it? Yes, I might think so. Clothes soaked, food ruined, people ridding themselves of lungs of water, quite overdone indeed. Got any plans to make up for it?"

Re: Demons Run {Closed / Jacky}

Oh there was a lady.

“Hello, lady!” Success; Jacky was the smoothest hero, obviously. But she didn’t go away after his quick nod and a bright beaming smile. So she was a difficult lady. That was a problem. She also kept making a face that made him feel squiggly. And there were others. For some reason they didn’t sound happy either. This was a situation that would require tact and patience.

He flipped onto his stomach and slammed his chin into the dirt in order to drag himself along. A few feet at most and Jacky planted his face against the ground instead. There was too much ow involved in this kind of retreat. That might be from the impact, though. Hard to tell since it all sort of bled together. But as much as he might have liked to go elsewhere he still needed a few more minutes before he’d be ready to get back on his feet. The doctors would probably yell again. He didn’t like that.

His guts churned and rumbled with hunger.

He whined.

“Jacky should not have jumped so high and is very sorry.” And to his credit, sounded absolutely miserable between spitting out sand and grass. Again he tried using his face to crawl away but gave up with a sigh when it didn’t go any better than the first time. The best he could manage was getting a hand underneath his frame enough to do some of what he needed to. First, turning back on his belt, and then retrieving a few of the pills from his pocket. Both were very important, or they had continually told Jacky that.

A dry swallow took care of the latter. It felt a little better but didn’t fix anything. They’d said to be patient but it seemed like the medicine should work quicker than it did. Taste better if it couldn’t do that much. Usually he’d make a funny face but he already didn’t like how sand tasted. He opted to make more uncomfortable noises.

When a seagull landed on his back long enough to peck at the back of Jacky’s head he let out one long droning scream instead. It only ended after the bird flapped in response, smacking him with its wings. And so began a secondary conversation between him and the animal that mostly involved yelling at the bird after it would squawk harshly at him.

Well then. . .

Alice wasn't entirely sure what to make of the young man. Maybe he'd hit his head on the way down? Perhaps, but he'd have to have been knocked silly in the first place to think jumping so high was a good idea. She couldn't leave him alone, that much was for certain. She dropped the pretense of looking mad entirely when he flipped over and started dragging himself along by his chin. Her concern only grew for the head injury theory, but even when looking closely, there were no major bumps or lacerations she could make out. She did wince from the faceplant. That was going to lead to some kind of head injury from that no doubt.

"So long as you're sorry." she responded as she walked up alongside him. The second attempt at a great escape was a little more amusing than the first. Since it was clear he understood at least why his actions were bad, he didn't seem as much a danger to others. Mostly himself, but he had to be pretty durable already to survive a drop onto water like that.

As for the seagull, well, Alice wasn't going to let that stand for very long at all. She scrambled to the side and grabbed a vaguely club shaped piece of drift wood that became even more club shaped in the air between it and the bird. It was so busy with Jacky that it didn't see the bit of wood coming until the last second. Alice managed to tag it, sending it tumbling into the air as it tried its best to get away from her. She took a few more swings in its direction, shouting at the winged sea rat, and almost growling at it to convince the bird that this washed up creature was far more trouble than the potential meal was worth. Just for good measure she also chased off any that were closer than ten feet before returning to Jacky and dropping down into the sand next to him. His torso, rather than his head. He'd likely swallowed enough sand already.

Alice stuck her makeshift weapon into the sand in front of her and sighed. This was not what she'd come to the beach for. She wanted to stroll and find her driftwood peacefully, not with spastic action. She looked down over to Jacky and cleared her throat.
"Ahem. As I was going to say before we were interrupted, it is nice to meet you Jacky. My name is Alice. Since you seem to be incapacitated for the moment, is there anything I can do to help? Anyone I should call? Maybe just roll you onto your back so you stop breathing sand?" she suggested as she went ahead and did that last thing on the itinerary.

Re: Demons Run {Closed / Jacky}

Jacky hadn’t asked but the nice lady saw fit enough to help him. He did his part, of course. It wasn’t near as grand as before; not near the same effort or sensation of slipping free, but the feeling was unmistakable. Least Jacky could do is make it easier on her. Not quite the same reflex as days gone by. He would have apologized more; probably would’ve hurt himself far worse trying to move just not to be the burden he felt like.  The practice helped. With that much at least he knew the motions to follow so as not to do that. Harder, by far, not to let that show on his face.

Medicine seemed to be helping by the time he flopped bonelessly onto his back. Sensation returned; or at least something beyond the aches and stiff, vice-like pain that very nearly always followed overexertion. The occasional knife-sharp sort if he moved the wrong way or put weight on the fractures he no doubt had. A quick assessment and a bit of focus would make it mostly a non-issue. Enough, at least, that he could function once their medicine had really had a chance to do what it was meant to.

A flash of a smile, even a slight blush and he managed to sit up. Had to lean harder on the left arm than the right, but it still wasn’t all that bad.

“Thank you, Nice Lady. Jacky appreciates it.” Didn’t matter if it hurt, now did it? Couldn’t let it show. Not with people around to see it. Wouldn’t be going anywhere any time soon but that was why the Nice Lady had been asking him. No good answer to give her, though. No sense in prolonging it though.

“Jacky will be ok. Just needs to rest a little bit.” A simple nod, and with some difficulty he slipped hand into one of the many pockets he stored one thing or another in. A little searching yielded one of those nutrition bars they’d insisted he keep. It was peanut butter so at least it wasn’t terrible. Ripping the packaging with his teeth he tore into one end, before carefully using his palm and thumb to split in two before he offered her the other half.

Ah but she wasn’t the only one there. What had started as a disgruntled gathering seemed to come to turn into something else entirely? A few people there noticed his costume, and from there either seemed to figure out who he was or already seemed to be checking through the listings to find out. That solved one problem he supposed. Then again, maybe not. Crowds always made his skin itch; suffocated him more and more as they grew. Didn’t stop smiling, or chewing, but already he was looking for the path of least resistance once he felt well enough to try and slip away.

A small, uncertain noise came out muffled behind the food in his mouth before swallowing.
